I would like to know what type of kimono I should wear with hakama. I know that you can wear furisode for formal occasions, but what about other situations? Obviously wearing a tomesode would be weird because all the design is hidden by the hakama. Could someone make a list of proper kimono types with hakama for each occasion?

Hakama

Nowadays, women wear hakama on very few occasions. Outside of a formal dance recital (as a performer) or for martial arts, I can only think of two instance when hakama might be worn.
The first is when they graduate from high school (which is the most common occasion). The hakama tend to be a solid color (often a dark pastel) with perhaps some whispy decoration around the hem (as if it were the hem of the kimono itself). Of course tatstes vary greatly, so this isn't an absolute. The furisode (which is de-regieur if the occassion is very solemn), might be either a paler tone, or a contrasting color altogether. It can be as dressy or casual as the wearer or situation demands. The 'han-haba' obi probably makes the most sense with the hakama, but I'm almost positive that some kimono schools might recommend a full-width obi for some situations. For less formal occasions (i.e. casual), a short-sleeved kimono might be worn instead.
The second instance (which is rare), is if the girl is wearing a juni-hitoe-style of wedding dress. In that case, the hakama are plain red, and the o-sode are pretty much limited to what the bridal rental shop has available.
As to a formal list, I don't think there is a clear consensus on what goes with what, outside of common-sense. However, I'll do some digging and respond later with more detailed suggestions.
