How exactly does one store an uchikake? They're much thicker and heavier than a kimono so I'm wondering if there is special treatment for them. I have 5 and there's no room for them for display at this point. What I did was to fold it with tissue in between layers and stored them in large boxes that they came in. Two I folded and put into drawers. Other than that, I'm not sure how to store them. All of mine are heavily brocaded, so I'm concerned that the folding can rub off some of the metallic threads. One uchikake came from a rental store, and I'm thinking that perhaps stores actually hung them when stored away. I don't think my closets can hold such large pieces! How do others store their uchikake?

To fold an uchikake, lay the garment on a flat surface so the the back portion is free of wrinkles. Fold each lapel over the other, and smooth out any folds that may develop. Next, fold each sleeve panel inward, atop the lapels. If you've done everyhting correctly, you should have a rectangular form, with the padded hem at one end and the neckline at the other.
At this point, fold the entire garment into thirds or fourths (whichever will fit the container you intend to use for starage. You can layer acid-free tissue paper between any and all layers of fabric throughout the whole folding process.
