I've just picked up my first kimono. It's a sort of greenish greyish bluish colour, and I have a blue and silvery greyish white obi.
The fabric is polyester, so it's not formal, but I'd like to wear it as formal from time to time. Can I combine it with a black haori and black and white striped hakama for a formal look?
If I order a plain black kimono and haori and wear them with hakama, will that look formal?
Can I wear the above (two) with white strapped tatami zori?

Ex__,
What determines whether a man's kimono is formal or not is the use of 'mon' on it. That applies to the haori as well. Certainly a pair of hakama will raise the tone of the whole outfit to a more formal level, but without a haori (decorated with mon), something will be lacking. The zori should have black or brown straps if worn for formal occassions. Polyester by its' self doesn't decide the issue of formality.

I was given to understand that only white strapped tatami zori are worn with montsuki kimono.
But would you see a black (non-montsuki) kimono and haori with black and white striped hakama, white tabi and zori as formal?

Yes most formal would be white straps. Men usually wear white strapped zori to their wedding. But I think you could get away with black strapped ^_^
Non crested kimono are never formal (at least for men)
I would think a black (none crested) kimono haori set, paired with a striped hakama would at least "look" formal. But it is not formal you could not wear it for ceremonial occasions, but you probably could to formal parties.
